Hungary Intends to Block Ukraine’s NATO, EU Membership Bid

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared on Monday evening via social media that Hungary intends to block Ukraine’s integration into both NATO and the European Union during pivotal summits scheduled this week.

Orban emphasized that Hungary’s goal is to halt any formal institutional connections between Ukraine and these Western alliances, warning that such moves could trigger conflict and destabilize the region’s financial landscape.

He characterized Ukraine’s possible NATO accession as an "immediate and direct threat," highlighting concerns related to the alliance’s collective defense obligations. Regarding EU membership, Orban described it as a "constant and indirect threat" with the potential to intensify unexpectedly.

The prime minister also expressed concerns about the economic fallout for Hungary if Ukraine joins the EU, suggesting it would damage Hungarian farmers' interests, drive down wages, displace local workers, and shift funding away from Hungary to Ukraine.

Looking ahead to the NATO summit in The Hague (Tuesday to Wednesday) and the EU summit in Brussels (Thursday to Friday), Orban assured that Hungary will steer through these challenging negotiations with resilience and seasoned judgment.
