Türkiye Finalizes Deal to Open UNRWA Office
(MENAFN) Türkiye and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) formalized a landmark agreement on Monday to open a UNRWA office within Türkiye, the agency announced.
This accord, finalized during the 51st Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers gathering in Istanbul, “marks a milestone in the relationship between the agency and Türkiye and bears testimony to the country’s political and financial support to UNRWA,” the agency emphasized.
Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s commissioner-general, praised the initiative, describing it as a “strategic decision” poised to broaden the agency’s political and financial backing.
“This new office will enable UNRWA to diversify and expand its political and financial support base,” Lazzarini stated. “I also commend the Turkish government for increasing its humanitarian assistance to UNRWA during the war, using a combination of funding to support lifesaving operations and wheat flour to the people of Gaza.”
The agreement, known as the Host Country Agreement, sets the stage for enhanced cooperation between UNRWA and Türkiye’s government, fostering deeper collaboration with Turkish institutions and the public, the agency explained.
“Since it became a member of the UNRWA Advisory Commission in 1949, Türkiye has been a longstanding supporter and partner of the agency to serve Palestinian refugees," the statement added.
For decades, UNRWA has delivered critical services—including primary healthcare, education, and emergency aid—to Palestinian refugees residing across the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.
