Lee Jae Myung Discusses Ties with Indonesia, Malaysia

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held individual phone conversations on Monday with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to explore bilateral ties, according to a news agency.

These conversations marked President Lee's first official engagement with leaders of the two Southeast Asian nations since assuming office earlier this month.

During his discussion with Anwar Ibrahim, both leaders conveyed their aspirations to deepen the strategic alliance between their nations, as relayed by South Korea’s presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung.

They also agreed to collaborate on efforts to “further expand mutually beneficial and substantive cooperation in a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, infrastructure, digital transformation, green growth, and defense,” particularly in light of the anticipated conclusion of the South Korea-Malaysia free trade agreement this year, the spokesperson added.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic engagement between South Korea and Malaysia.

Both countries are scheduled to host major regional forums later this year—South Korea will hold the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, while Malaysia will preside over ASEAN-related gatherings.

Later, President Lee held a phone call with Prabowo Subianto to review the state of South Korea’s relationship with Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia.
