South Korea Withdraws from NATO Summit

(MENAFN) Media reported Monday that South Korea has scaled down its role in this week's NATO summit in the Netherlands, citing internal issues and rising instability in the Middle East.

President Lee Jae Myung will not be attending the high-level meetings set for Tuesday and Wednesday in The Hague. Instead, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac will represent the country, according to a statement from the Presidential Office.

Although South Korea is not a NATO member, the alliance has extended invitations to Seoul, Tokyo, and Canberra in recent years to strengthen regional partnerships.

President Lee’s decision was attributed to pressing domestic “priorities” and the volatile situation unfolding in the Middle East.

Tensions in the region have spiked following a U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday, adding to the already fraught conflict between Israel and Iran.
