Powerful Earthquake Rattles Southeastern Taiwan

(MENAFN) A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 rattled southeastern Taiwan on Wednesday evening, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck offshore near Changbin township in Taitung county at approximately 7 p.m. local time (1100 GMT), the USGS reported. This seismic event originated at a depth of 31.1 kilometers (19.3 miles) beneath the surface.

In contrast, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration recorded the earthquake as more intense, measuring it at magnitude 6.4, indicating a potentially stronger shaking felt in the region.

Despite the quake’s strength, no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage to buildings and infrastructure have emerged. Officials also confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the seismic activity, alleviating concerns of a secondary disaster.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely for any aftershocks or updates, while residents remain on alert in this earthquake-prone area.
