Egypt vows to protect St. Catherine’s Monastery

(MENAFN) Egypt reiterated its pledge to safeguard the religious status of the historic St. Catherine’s Monastery, nestled at the base of Mount Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula and officially linked to the Greek Orthodox Church.

This commitment was emphasized during a meeting held in Cairo on Wednesday between Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, and his Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis, as noted by statements from relevant authorities.

In addition to discussing the monastery, the two diplomats explored ways to strengthen the solid bilateral ties shared between their nations.

Abdelatty acknowledged “the historical ties between Egypt and Greece and their distinguished political, economic and cultural relations, which culminated last month in the elevation of relations to a Strategic Partnership during the first meeting of the High-Level Cooperation Council in Athens that was chaired by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis,” according to the statement.

The Egyptian official emphasized Egypt’s determination to continue building on this partnership across various sectors and informed his Greek counterpart about a recent court decision dated May 28 regarding the lands adjacent to St. Catherine’s Monastery.

This ruling upheld the monastery’s continued use of its religious and cultural sites, while confirming that the land itself remains publicly owned by the state.
