UN Chief Expresses Hope About New Sudan Premier's Role in Peace Efforts
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed optimism that Sudan’s newly appointed prime minister would be instrumental in promoting peace within the country.
Guterres acknowledged the recent decree by Sudan’s de facto leader, which saw Kamil Idris named as prime minister, according to a statement from Guterres' spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.
"The secretary-general hopes the appointment will serve as the first step toward inclusive consultations aimed at forming a broad-based technocratic government and forging peace," the statement read.
Guterres emphasized that efforts to reach consensus must be prioritized, leading to meaningful progress for the Sudanese people. This includes ending violence, providing essential services, and building a unified vision for the country's future.
On Monday, Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, issued a decree appointing Idris to the prime minister role. The position had remained vacant since Abdalla Hamdok’s resignation in January 2022, following Al-Burhan’s military coup in October 2021.
