Kuwait Stresses Significance Of UNSC Resolution On Missing Persons
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
NEW YORK, May 16 (KUNA) -- Kuwait stressed the importance of adhering to the provisions of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2474 (2019) on missing persons in armed conflicts, which aims at alleviating the suffering of many families.
This came in a speech delivered by Minister Plenipotentiary Faisal Al-Enezi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the UN, during a Security Council session on Thursday evening to discuss the implementation of the UN resolution on missing persons in armed conflicts.
Al-Enezi explained that the call for implementing this resolution came at a critical time, in light of the fierce, inhumane conflicts witnessed on regional and international arenas.
He said that adherence to humanitarian and legal practices is not merely a duty, but rather a bridge that connects the concerned parties to a common negotiating platform and strengthens trust and dialogue.
He added that providing information, revealing the fate of all missing persons, reuniting them, and treating remains with dignity in accordance with humanitarian standards are cornerstones for preventing impunity and holding perpetrators accountable.
Al-Enezi highlighted the Kuwaiti experience in this regard, given the real suffering Kuwait faced in the early 1990s, with its humanitarian dimensions touching every Kuwaiti and resident family.
He said that Kuwait hasn't healed yet from the Iraqi invasion, even with the continuation of field efforts to search for the remains of the remaining 308 missing persons, leaving many families displaced.
He reiterated Kuwait's firm position on this humanitarian issue to ensure continued progress on the ground, stressing the importance of appointing a high-level UN official to exclusively oversee the extensive process of identifying the remains of all missing persons.
Al-Enezi also stressed the importance of continuing the mechanism of periodic reviews by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. (end)
