Israeli Supreme Court Pressures Far-Right Minister to Respond to Petitions

(MENAFN) Israel’s Supreme Court has demanded that Itamar Ben-Gvir, the ultra-nationalist Minister of National Security, formally address multiple appeals calling for his removal from office.

The court has given him a deadline of six days to present his response.

Several civil rights organizations in Israel have charged Ben-Gvir with overstepping his boundaries by meddling in police activities, urging that he be relieved of his position.

Ben-Gvir, widely recognized for his controversial political stance, defends his actions by stating that the police are under his direct supervision due to his ministerial role.

Earlier this year in February, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara addressed Premier Benjamin Netanyahu in a letter expressing serious reservations about Ben-Gvir’s behavior and actions within his ministerial duties.

Following this, Ben-Gvir retaliated by accusing the attorney general of attempting a “coup against an elected government” and demanded her removal.

In March, the Israeli cabinet responded by unanimously voting to rescind confidence in Baharav-Miara, further intensifying the political tension surrounding the issue.

Ben-Gvir has gained infamy for his openly anti-Palestinian views and has publicly supported the continuation of Israel’s aggressive military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

This campaign has led to the deaths of almost 51,400 individuals since October 2023.

In a related development, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and previous Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in relation to actions in Gaza.
