US Ambassador Talks with Japanese Premier on Trump’s Tariffs

(MENAFN) The newly appointed US ambassador to Japan, George Glass, engaged in discussions with Japanese Premier Shigeru Ishiba regarding United States Leader Donald Trump’s tariff policies in Tokyo on Tuesday, as reported by Japan’s Foreign Ministry.

Ishiba and Glass “exchanged views on current Japan-US relations, including US tariff measures,” based on an official statement from the ministry.

Glass, who is a real estate entrepreneur from Oregon, assumed his ambassadorial role just days earlier on Friday.

During the meeting, Ishiba emphasized that the “Japan-US alliance is the cornerstone of Japan’s diplomacy and security” and expressed a desire to further bolster the relationship between the two countries.

In response, Glass agreed, stating that the “Japan-US alliance is the most important alliance” and pledged to work toward strengthening bilateral ties, as noted by the Foreign Ministry.

Both parties also concurred that Japan and the United States must enhance their defense and response capabilities while reducing the impact on local communities.

Additionally, Ishiba highlighted on Monday that Trump “values” discussions with Japan following the meeting between Trump and Japanese Economy Minister Akazawa Ryosei at the White House the previous week.

Ryosei was the first foreign trade negotiator invited by Trump after the president announced a 90-day extension for all nations, except China, to negotiate tariff agreements with the US.
