Robust earthquake strikes Myanmar in Thailand

(MENAFN) A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread damage in the country and neighboring Thailand. The quake, which had a shallow depth of 10 km, hit northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar. Shortly after, a 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed.

In Thailand, the tremors caused the collapse of a 30-story skyscraper under construction in Bangkok’s Chatuchak Park area. The collapse resulted in one worker's death and 50 others injured, with some still trapped under the rubble. Buildings in both Myanmar’s Mandalay and Naypyidaw cities also sustained significant damage, including collapsed structures and cracked roads.

The earthquake’s tremors were felt in other regions, including China’s Yunnan province. In response to the crisis, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared Bangkok an "emergency zone" and urged other provinces to treat the earthquake as a national emergency. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the situation and offered assistance to both Myanmar and Thailand.
