Nearly 700 Dead In Myanmar Earthquake
According to reports, Myanmar officials have confirmed that the death toll from the earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 694, with 1,670 people injured. The earthquake, which occurred on Friday, March 28, had a magnitude of 7.7 and also affected parts of Thailand.
General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of Myanmar's military government, stated that the earthquake is expected to result in more casualties. He invited“every country” to offer assistance and financial aid.
Reports suggest that most of the devastation occurred in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, which was near the earthquake's epicenter. The earthquake struck during lunchtime and was followed by strong aftershocks and several medium tremors.
Myanmar is one of the poorest countries, currently embroiled in a civil war, and information is heavily controlled. Images from Mandalay show cracked roads, destroyed highways, collapsed bridges, and a dam, raising concerns about how rescue teams will reach some areas, especially in a country already facing a widespread humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, a 33-story building under construction near the famous Chatuchak market in Bangkok collapsed unexpectedly, creating a dust cloud. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his administration had contacted Myanmar officials and would offer assistance. Chinese President Xi Jinping also expressed condolences to the Myanmar government and people, offering full cooperation.
The United Nations has announced that it is gathering information on the earthquake's impact in Myanmar and the related humanitarian needs. The earthquake's magnitude was reported as 7.7 in Myanmar and 7.3 in Bangkok. Following the earthquake in Bangkok, Thailand's Prime Minister declared a state of emergency.
The earthquake's impact has been devastating for both Myanmar and neighboring countries, with global leaders pledging support. The situation remains critical, and international aid efforts are essential to providing immediate relief to the affected areas.
