Deadly fire claims four lives in Santiago camp

(MENAFN) A devastating fire in a Santiago camp claimed the lives of four people, including two minors, early Wednesday morning, according to reports from local media and the Carabineros militarized police force.

The blaze erupted shortly after midnight Tuesday in a one-story house located in the Cerrillos district, southwest of the Chilean capital, as confirmed by Lt. Col. Christian Bichett.

"We were alerted, notified by firefighters and residents of El Esfuerzo camp that a fire was burning at a one-story house, and as a result of the fire, the roof unfortunately collapsed, resulting in four deaths," Bichett stated.

The victims, identified as two adults and two minors, were all members of a Haitian family residing at the camp.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire. Bichett further noted, "The fire department is currently investigating the underlying cause of the fire, whether it was electrical or something else."
