Nigerian-American Filmmaker Makes History as Youngest Nominee for Nobel Peace Prize
(MENAFN) Nigerian-American filmmaker, who is also an education advocate Zuriel Oduwole has already made an impact on the globe.
At the young age of 22, she is making history by being the youngest Nigerian ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize — as well as being the first to be listed in the Peace category.
Since embarking on her filmmaking career when she was nine, Oduwole has consistently developed a reputation as a strong advocate for change in media and social causes, particularly in her fight against child marriage, which she has brought to the attention of global leaders.
Born in Los Angeles, Oduwole’s journey has taken her around the world, with a significant emphasis on Africa. Her work, however, is not just a personal accomplishment.
It is a testament to years of effort spent using media as a platform to highlight the voices that often go unheard, advocating for girls’ education, and pushing for real policy reforms.
Upon hearing about her nomination, Oduwole’s initial reaction was one of complete astonishment. “How did I feel about the Nobel Peace Prize nomination? I think it was shock, complete shock,” Oduwole recalls. “It was such an unexpected thing to hear about. My whole family — they'll tell you they're also still in shock.”
