Thai PM withstands no-confidence vote in parliament

(MENAFN) Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra successfully navigated a no-confidence motion in the nation's parliament Wednesday, securing a decisive victory and reinforcing her political standing. She garnered the support of 319 lawmakers within the 493-seat lower house, surpassing the required 247 votes to retain her position.

The opposition, however, registered significant dissent, with 162 lawmakers voting against the Pheu Thai Party leader. This challenge marks a key moment in Shinawatra's early tenure, which began in August of last year.

Following the vote, Shinawatra, 38, addressed the outcome via social media platform X, stating, “Every vote, whether in support or against, will serve as motivation for me and the Cabinet to remain committed to working for our fellow citizens moving forward,” Her response emphasized a commitment to national service despite the opposition's challenge.

Paetongtarn, daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has ascended to the role of Thailand's third prime minister, continuing the legacy of the powerful Shinawatra family. Her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, had previously served in the same position.
