First Case of H5N1 Bird Flu Gets Discovered in Sheep in Britain

(MENAFN) For the first time, a case of H5N1 bird flu, also known as avian influenza, has been discovered in a sheep in the UK, according to an announcement made by the government on Monday.

The chief veterinary officer of the UK confirmed the detection of the virus in one sheep located in Yorkshire, a region in northern England. This discovery followed repeated positive results from milk testing.

"The case was identified following routine surveillance of co-located livestock on a premises where avian influenza had been confirmed in captive birds," the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs stated in their report.

In response to the outbreak of avian influenza in dairy cows in the United States, the department had already put in place livestock surveillance measures on infected farms.

The affected sheep was euthanized to facilitate thorough testing, and additional tests were conducted on the remaining sheep flock at the premises by the avian influenza national reference laboratory at the Animal and Plant Health Agency Weybridge laboratory.

The report clarified that no further cases of bird flu were found in the remaining flock, confirming that this is still an isolated case of mammalian infection on the premises.

It also emphasized that there is no evidence indicating a heightened risk to the country's livestock population.
