U.S. Defense Secretary Denies War Plans Leak
(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded Monday to a report suggesting a journalist was mistakenly added to a sensitive messaging group, asserting that "nobody was texting war plans."
Hegseth addressed the issue with reporters in Hawaii, stating, "Nobody was texting war plans, and that's all I have to say about that."
His comments followed an article by Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of a magazine, who revealed that he had been accidentally included in a group of senior officials on the Signal messaging platform on March 13.
The inclusion came after Goldberg received a connection request from National Security Advisor Mike Waltz two days earlier, ostensibly to discuss plans for military strikes against Yemen's Houthi party.
Hegseth sharply criticized Goldberg, calling him a "deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who's made a profession of peddling hoaxes time and time again," adding, “This is a guy who peddles in garbage."
National Security Council representative Brian Hughes confirmed earlier that the leaked messages appeared to be "authentic."
According to Goldberg, the messaging group also included accounts seemingly representing senior officials from the Trump administration, such as Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Hegseth, as well as National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard.
