Israeli Police Clear Demonstrators Blocking Knesset
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Israeli police forcibly removed dozens of anti-government demonstrators who were obstructing the Knesset in western Jerusalem.
The protests, which started early in the morning, led to hours of confrontation outside the parliament building.
As reported by an Israeli media source, law enforcement officers cleared the protesters, many of whom had sat on the ground outside the Knesset.
Tensions escalated when clashes erupted as the police moved to evict the demonstrators, who had gathered on the road leading to the entrance of the Knesset. The protests took place shortly after lawmakers passed the 2025 state budget, according to media sources.
By 1715GMT, nine protesters had been arrested during the unrest. Earlier in the day, demonstrators used vehicles to block the Knesset entrances, which prompted Defense Minister Israel Katz to travel by military helicopter.
Meanwhile, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir along with other officials had to walk to the building under heavy security after protesters blocked their convoy, as reported by a news website.
The demonstrations were aimed at several government actions, including the resumption of military operations in the Gaza Strip, the abandonment of Israeli hostages, the firing of Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, attempts to remove Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, as well as the passage of the 2025 budget. Critics have denounced the budget, calling it "a robbery budget."
