China Denies Reports of Duterte Seeking Asylum

(MENAFN) On Monday, China rejected claims that previous Philippine Leader Rodrigo Duterte had attempted to seek asylum in Beijing before his arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC), allegations that were reportedly denied by Chinese authorities.

Guo Jiakun, a representative for China's Foreign Ministry, stated, "Chinese government has never received any application for so-called asylum from him (Duterte) and his family," according to a Chinese news agency.

The representative also clarified that both the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong and the Philippines had already addressed Duterte’s visit to Hong Kong, which he had made as a private trip for leisure.

This explanation followed worries raised by Duterte's daughter, Vice President Sarah Duterte, who expressed fears that her father might face assassination if he returns to the Philippines.

Despite her concerns, the presidential office of the Philippines described her claims as "baseless."

Duterte is currently facing trial at the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity related to his controversial "war on drugs," accusations he vehemently denies.

He was arrested earlier this month upon his return from Hong Kong and was promptly taken to The Hague to stand trial.
