Muslim Woman Gets Attacked at Library in Canada

(MENAFN) A suspect is now in detention following an assault on a Muslim woman at a public library near Toronto, Canada, where the attacker attempted to set the victim's hijab on fire, based on a police statement released on Sunday.

Durham Regional Police reported that the victim was studying in the library when an unknown woman approached her. The attacker began yelling insults at the victim and throwing objects at her head. The suspect then tried to remove the victim’s hijab, pouring an unidentified liquid on it before attempting to ignite it with a lighter.

The victim screamed for assistance, and library security staff quickly intervened. Although the assailant fled the scene, police arrested the suspect a few hours later.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) expressed their shock and anger over the incident in a press release, condemning the attack.

Stephen Brown, CEO of NCCM, called the attack "an outrage," emphasizing that such acts of violence have become more common within the community. He also highlighted the alarming rise in Islamophobia in recent years.

“It is time for our elected leaders to step up and address this issue collaboratively,” Brown urged, calling for collective action to combat these growing incidents.
