Firefighters Carry on Fighting Wildfires in South Korea

(MENAFN) Firefighters remained engaged in efforts to control wildfires in South Korea’s southeastern area on Monday, marking the fourth consecutive day of intense battle.

In an attempt to prevent the flames from spreading further, authorities deployed numerous helicopters to the affected areas.

The devastating wildfires, initially igniting in Sancheong County, have now spread into the neighboring Hadong County, according to government reports from a Korean news agency in Seoul.
The fires have caused significant destruction, with the fires continuing to affect both regions.

On Monday morning, roughly 36 helicopters were sent to the two regions in South Gyeongsang province, located about 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Seoul, in an effort to control the blaze. The wildfires have claimed the lives of four people so far.

To prevent the fires from reaching residential areas and infrastructure, over 2,300 firefighters and military personnel have been dispatched to the ground. The government emphasized their efforts to protect the surrounding communities.

The Sancheong wildfire, which began on Friday, has resulted in six injuries and the destruction of more than 20 buildings, including two Buddhist temples. As the fire spread into Hadong, at least 600 people in both regions were forced to evacuate.

By Monday morning, officials reported that 70 percent of the wildfires in Sancheong had been contained, though challenges remain in controlling the spread.
