South Korea's Constitutional Court dismisses impeachment of Prime Minister Han

(MENAFN) South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled on Monday to dismiss the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, clearing the way for him to resume his duties as acting president during the ongoing political unrest following President Yoon Suk Yeol’s suspension.

In a 5-1 decision, the court reversed the National Assembly's impeachment of Han, who had been accused of being involved in Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law on December 3, according to a local news agency.

Two of the justices voted to fully reject the impeachment motion.

The ruling comes 87 days following the parliamentary impeachment, which has intensified the country's political crisis, as opposition parties and civil society groups continue to challenge Yoon’s controversial actions.

Though four of the justices acknowledged constitutional and legal violations in Han's decision to delay the appointment of additional court justices, they determined that this did not warrant his removal from office.
