Deadly wildfires ravage South Korea, leading to fatalities

(MENAFN) Local media sources reported on Sunday that over 4 individuals have lost their lives, while 6 others have sustained injuries, with almost 1,500 citizens have been relocated as wildfires rage through South Korea’s southeastern area.

Originating in Sancheong County on Friday, the blaze has rapidly spread to three multiple areas, according to local sources.

All casualties were reported in Sancheong, with five victims in critical condition.
Authorities have evacuated about 1,500 residents to safety, but firefighters are confronting significant challenges in containing the fire. Over 30 helicopters have been deployed to assist in extinguishing the flames.

By Sunday morning, authorities had managed to contain approximately 30% of the wildfire in Sancheong. Lee Han-kyung, deputy head of the disaster control tower, attributed the rapid spread of the fire to dry conditions.

As of now, roughly 3,286 hectares—equivalent to about 4,600 soccer fields—have been consumed by the flames, with more than 1,000 hectares of land destroyed in both Euiseong in North Gyeongsang Province and Sancheong.
