Trump declares Russia possesses ‘very valuable earth’

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of restoring economic ties with Russia due to its vast landmass and abundant mineral resources, particularly rare earth elements (REE). Trump made the statement after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where they discussed bilateral relations and the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Both leaders agreed that improved relations between the US and Russia could lead to "enormous economic deals" once peace is achieved.

Trump highlighted Russia’s vast size, spanning 11 time zones and rich in valuable natural resources. He also referenced a rare earth deal with Ukraine that had been under discussion but faltered after contentious talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in February. Despite the setback, Trump stressed that the US should continue to engage with Russia on economic issues.

Rare earth elements, essential for modern technologies like electronics, defense systems, and renewable energy, are notably abundant in Russia, which holds over 20% of the global stockpile. However, Russia’s current share of global REE production is under 1%, signaling untapped potential. Trump and Putin expressed interest in cooperating on developing Russia’s rare earth deposits, which could provide mutual benefits.

Additionally, Forbes noted that Ukraine’s REE deposits are largely located in regions like Donetsk and Lugansk, which have been under Russian control since 2022 following referendums in these territories.
