Syrian Forces Arrest Brigadier General in Connection to Ousted Regime
(MENAFN) Syrian security forces announced on Saturday the arrest of Brigadier General Abdel Karim Al-Hamada, a close ally of Maher Assad, the brother of previous Syrian leader Bashar Assad.
The arrest took place in the Deir ez-Zor governorate in eastern Syria and was communicated through the official Telegram channel of the governorate.
Based on the statement, the General Directorate of Public Security in Deir ez-Zor detained Al-Hamada, who previously held the position of "director of the settlement file" under the ousted regime. Additionally, Al-Hamada was reportedly in charge of facilitating coordination between officers of the former regime and leaders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, as detailed by a news agency.
As of 2000GMT, there has been no official statement from the Iranian authorities regarding Al-Hamada's arrest.
Bashar Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime forces gained control of Damascus on December 8, effectively ending the Baath Party's rule, which had lasted since 1963. In late January, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the efforts to oust Assad, was announced president for a transitional period.
