VOA staff file lawsuit against Trump administration

(MENAFN) Journalists from Voice of America (VOA) have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration and senior adviser Kari Lake, claiming that the sudden closure of the US-funded network infringes on the First Amendment and congressional powers, as reported by media outlets.

The lawsuit, which was filed in a federal court in Manhattan on Friday, demands the reinstatement of over 900 full-time employees and 550 contractors who have been placed on indefinite leave, media sources have confirmed.

Joining the legal action are Patsy Widakuswara, who previously led VOA's White House coverage, Jessica Jerreat, the network's Press Freedom Editor, and Kathryn Neeper, a high-ranking official at USAGM.

Kari Lake, who was appointed by Trump to lead USAGM, defended the shutdown, stating, "Waste, fraud, and abuse run rampant in this agency and American taxpayers shouldn’t have to fund it."

For more than a week, VOA's homepage and streaming services have been inactive as a result of the shutdown.

David Seide, the lead attorney representing the plaintiffs, condemned Lake's resolution, stating, "Unfortunately, Kari Lake lives in a MAGA fantasy world, but her decisions impact the lives of hundreds of journalists in the real world."

The lawsuit is supported by media rights organizations and labor unions.
