U.S. Department of Defense terminates contracts worth hundreds of millions

(MENAFN) On Thursday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the termination of over $580 million in contracts and grants, citing a drive to eliminate wasteful spending. This action is part of a collaborative effort with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative supported by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Hegseth stated: "We're back with another quick update on our efforts to cut wasteful spending and cut it quickly at the Department of Defense so we get the dollars to the things that the war fighters need.”

In a video released on X, Hegseth explained: "So today, I'm signing a memo directing the termination of over $580 million in DoD contracts, in grants that do not match the priorities of this president or this department."

He described the canceled expenditures as part of an "HR software effort," initially projected to cost $36 million and be completed within a year, but which has now ballooned to $280 million after eight years.

Hegseth also noted: "Number two, another batch of DOD grants, $360 million worth this time."

Additionally, a $30 million decrease in spending was achieved by scaling back external consulting agreements with firms such as Gartner and McKinsey, he reported.
