J & K Frames Policy For Private Varsities, Awaits Approval

Jammu- The Higher Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir has drafted a policy for the establishment of private universities in the region. The policy, once approved by the relevant authorities, will officially allow private universities to be set up in the Union Territory, the department said.

Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed this development in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.“The Higher Education Department has framed a draft policy concerning the setting up of private universities in Jammu & Kashmir,” she said. She added that after approval from the competent authority, the policy would pave the way for private universities in the region.

Responding to inquiries about a satellite campus in Ramban under the University of Jammu, the minister clarified,“At present, there is no proposal regarding the establishment of a satellite campus in the Ramban constituency on the pattern of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University.” However, she mentioned that a committee has been formed to evaluate the feasibility of an offsite campus in Ramban, considering local needs.

Currently, Jammu and Kashmir is home to 11 universities, including nine state universities and two central universities.
