Afghanistan Begins New 1404 Academic Year Without Girls Above Sixth Grade
However, girls' schools for students above sixth grade remain closed, and the fate of their reopening remains uncertain.
During a ceremony marking the occasion in Kabul, Habibullah Agha, the acting Minister of Education, stated that the curriculum content of schools would be reviewed, and topics contradicting“Afghanistan culture and traditions” would be removed from the educational syllabus.
He emphasized that the new curriculum would be based on religious teachings and modern sciences.
Habibullah Agha said,“Topics that go against Afghanistan culture and religion will be removed from the curriculum, regardless of who agrees or disagrees. We will create a curriculum that is religious, modern, and suited to Afghanistan society.”
The Taliban authorities have not provided new details regarding the reopening of schools for girls above sixth grade.
Meanwhile, the closure of girls' schools has now entered its fourth year, with no clear timeline on when the opportunity for education will be restored for girls.
The ongoing closure of girls' schools beyond sixth grade is a significant setback for the education system in Afghanistan, particularly for female students. The restrictions on education, including higher education and access to medical institutes and universities, have severely limited opportunities for Afghanistan's women to pursue their academic and professional goals.
These education limitations, particularly the exclusion of girls from pursuing their studies, are not only harmful to individual aspirations but also to the future development of the country as a whole. Without proper education for all, Afghanistan's progress in various fields will be significantly hindered, and the potential of an entire generation of young women is being stifled.
The new academic year begins under the circumstance that the deprivation of girls above sixth grade from education has entered its fourth year, and it remains unclear when educational opportunities will reopen for girls.
