Amman, Mar. 20 (Petra)-- Senate Speaker Faisal Al-Fayez said, "The reality confirms that the West has begun to adopt a policy of double standards and double standards regarding issues of public freedoms and democratic practice."
Speaking Thursday at a conference organized by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, Al-Fayez emphasized that democracy is a shared responsibility since it is a fundamental value that upholds citizens' rights and freedoms and fosters equality and social justice for all.
According to a Senate statement, the two-day conference will cover a wide range of topics, including protecting democracy, guaranteeing freedom of expression and publication, and violence in the context of the current global political and security problems.
One of the most crucial elements of protecting and solidifying democracy in countries is an environment of political and security stability, which al-Fayez emphasized is necessary for its strengthening and maintenance. Its development also necessitates giving up the practice of using double standards and focusing on defending international organizations and institutions that defend justice, human rights, and public freedoms rather than interfering with, undermining, or transgressing their principles.
He emphasized that parliamentary institutions and international organizations that deal with public freedoms, human rights, and conflict resolution must be able to implement international legitimacy resolutions pertaining to peoples' rights to freedom and independence, reject racism and sectarianism, and respect minorities' rights while also working to strengthen common cultural and civilizational denominators among peoples. He also emphasized the significance of putting in place explicit policies and strong laws that ensure freedom of publication and expression, transparency, and integrity, as well as the presence of laws that defend the judiciary's independence and fight corruption in all of its manifestations.
He went on to say: For instance, the Palestinian people have endured nearly eight decades of suffering under Israeli occupation, and since October 7, 2023, they have been the target of the most horrific acts of aggression by the Israeli occupation state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Tens of thousands of martyrs and wounded, primarily women and children, have died as a result of this aggression.
Al-Fayez went on, "Social media, which is meant to support freedom of expression, freedom of publication, and public freedoms, has regrettably added to the problems that democracy faces. It has encouraged hate speech, bigotry, violence, religious and ethnic strife, and the use of disinformation campaigns to rig elections and their results. Social differences have widened as a result, and most peoples are now inclined toward extremism. According to him, societal discontent has spread throughout many nations as a result of a loss of faith in democratic institutions, disparity between the North and the South, and the growing economic and technological divide between them. "All of these factors have put democracy and its future through a difficult test," he explained.
