Brazil To Welcome African Agricultural Researchers

(MENAFN- Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) Brasília – Brazil's agricultural research agency Embrapa , the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation (ABC ), and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA ) will fund the arrival of African agricultural researchers to Brazil .

Representatives from the three institutions signed a letter of intent on Wednesday (19) to bring about the exchange of specialists . The goal is to foster technical cooperation between Brazil and the 55 African countries, strengthening the international collaboration network with a focus on food security.

Details about the implementation of the initiative are yet to be defined, but the institutions have already anticipated that the plan is to include, for a certain period, at least 30 researchers from scientific institutes, universities, or government agencies .

Three research areas will be covered: regenerative agriculture -as a way to preserve natural resources, making production more sustainable; food and nutritional security -aiming to ensure access to healthy food for populations; and resilience and recovery of degraded areas -a key aspect for the sustainability of productive agricultural systems.

Seminar

The letter of intent was signed during the Africa-Brazil Dialogue on Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D&I) in Agriculture seminar held at Embrapa's headquarters in Brasília. The event was attended by representatives from the federal government, ambassadors from African countries with diplomatic representation in Brazil, members of cooperation and research institutions, and Indian scientist Rattan Lal, Nobel Prize winner.

The seminar served as a preparatory event for the meeting in May that will bring African Agriculture ministers to Brasília to discuss ways to increase agricultural productivity on the continent . Although Africa holds nearly 65% of the uncultivated arable land and about 10% of the planet's renewable water resources, the group of African countries imports a significant portion of the food it consumes.
