Amman, March 23 (Petra) – Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan commended Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC) for allocating JD40 million over three years as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to support the health and education sectors. The announcement follows last week's initiative by the Association of Banks in Jordan (ABJ), which earmarked JD90 million for the same purpose.
Speaking at a company-hosted iftar event on Sunday, attended by representatives from the private sector as well as industrial and commercial firms, Hassan emphasized the significance of the initiative within the company's broader CSR efforts.
He noted that JPMC has long provided ongoing developmental and charitable support, describing the company as a cornerstone of Jordan's mining industry.
The prime minister stressed that CSR is not merely about donations or charitable work but should be based on sustainable development policies that foster long-term partnerships, address priorities, and tackle current challenges.
He described CSR as the "other face" of the true partnership triangle between the public sector, private sector, and local communities.
"Corporate social responsibility is not a temporary effort or a reaction to exceptional circumstances; it must be a continuous policy that transcends governments and boardrooms, evolving into a national strategy to keep our focus on key priorities and objectives," Hassan said.
He expressed gratitude to Jordan's private sector for its contributions to national development and encouraged other companies to take similar institutionalized and proactive steps aligned with national priorities. "We are all partners in the drive for progress and modernization," he added.
Hassan also praised JPMC for its steady progress and commitment to economic modernization, highlighting its efforts to adopt strategic policies that enhance the mining sector, diversify options, expand downstream industries, and localize production to mitigate price fluctuations. He underscored the importance of governance frameworks that ensure institutional sustainability and transparency across all sectors.
The prime minister acknowledged JPMC's crucial role in the national economy and its extensive contributions to social responsibility initiatives, particularly in supporting local communities, where it remains a leading contributor.
"Jordan is strong and resilient, bolstered by its people, youth, and wise Hashemite leadership. The collaborative efforts of national private sector institutions are key to overcoming challenges during this critical phase of national development," Hassan stated.
For his part, JPMC Chairman Mohammad Thneibat reaffirmed the company's commitment to its social and developmental role as a key partner in the country's progress.
Thneibat highlighted JPMC's proactive CSR approach, recalling its response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when it donated 30% of its 2019 net profits to support government efforts.
He noted that the company's latest JD40 million health and education initiative reflects the growing demand for services in these sectors. To ensure proper implementation, the funds will be deposited in a dedicated account at the Central Bank of Jordan and managed according to accounting standards, with expenditures aligned with pre-approved execution plans and timelines.
Thneibat assured that this new commitment will not affect the company's other social responsibilities, which amounted to JOD 24 million in 2024 and totaled JOD 84 million over the past six years.
The launch event was attended by several ministers and senior private sector leaders.
