Kuwait Named World Crafts City For Sadu By World Crafts Council

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, March 20 (KUNA) -- Al-Sadu Society said Kuwait was named as "World Crafts City" for Sadu weaving by the World Crafts Council (WCC), in appreciation of its efforts to preserve this craft.
In a statement to KUNA on Thursday, the society's chairman Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al-Sabah said that the nomination came after an official visit by a WCC delegation to evaluate Kuwait's committment to preserve the craft.
The delegation, headed by the council's President Saad Al-Qaddoumi, visited Sadu House and other cultural centers in the country to learn of the work and efforts of Sadu weavers, she said. The delegation also met with representatives of governmental bodies and cultural institutes to discuss means of developing the craft globally, she added.
Sadu is a part of Kuwait's heritage, as the geometric shapes and bright colors of the craft represent the country's history and culture, said Sheikha Bibi. Sadu was a big part of the lives of Bedouins, used in tents, furniture and accessories throughout the ages, she noted.
WCC is a non-profit organization, established in New York in 1964 and is headquartered in Kuwait for the current presidency term. (end)
