Federal judge pauses disassembly of USAID by Musk’s DOGE

(MENAFN) A US federal judge has ordered Elon Musk’s Department of government Efficiency (DOGE) to halt its efforts to dismantle the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The ruling, issued by Judge Theodore Chuang of the District of Maryland, temporarily prevents DOGE from further restricting USAID employees’ access to the agency’s computer systems and prohibits the release of their personal information.

USAID, which oversees civilian foreign aid and development projects, has been criticized for alleged Political influence operations abroad. Musk has argued that the agency mismanages taxpayer funds, directing billions toward projects that he claims are either ineffective or harmful to US interests.

Judge Chuang expressed concerns that DOGE’s actions could violate the separation of powers, leading him to pause the agency’s dismantling. However, he did not reverse the terminations of former USAID employees, which the plaintiffs had requested.

The nonprofit State Democracy Defenders Action, which represents USAID employees, praised the ruling as a significant victory against Musk’s restructuring efforts. A spokesperson criticized DOGE’s approach, comparing it to performing “surgery with a chainsaw instead of a scalpel.”

Musk responded by calling the ruling “an attempted coup of American democracy by radical left activists posing as judges”, arguing that such decisions should have consequences. His comments, along with those from the Trump administration, have drawn backlash from the American Bar Association (ABA), which condemned the government’s attacks on the judiciary.

Judge Chuang, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014, has previously ruled against Trump-era policies, including the travel ban on Muslim-majority countries and restrictions on abortion pill access—decisions that were later overturned by the US Supreme Court.
