Amman, March 20 (Petra) -- A deepening cold air mass over Jordan is driving a significant drop in temperatures on Thursday, bringing conditions below seasonal averages, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department.
The weather will be cold and partly to mostly cloudy, with intermittent rain expected in the northern and central regions. The department noted that rain in the north could be heavy at times, with a slight chance of thunderstorms and hail.
Light and scattered showers may also affect parts of the east and southwest for brief periods. Strong westerly winds, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h in some areas, are expected to raise dust, particularly in the eastern and southeastern regions, leading to reduced visibility and potentially hazardous driving conditions on desert roads.
The Meteorological Department warned of several weather-related risks, including flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas in the north, reduced visibility due to dust storms in the east and southeast, and strong winds with powerful gusts in some areas.
It also cautioned about fog and low clouds over high-altitude areas, which could further limit visibility, and the risk of slippery roads due to rainfall.
On Friday, temperatures are expected to decrease slightly, with cold and partly to mostly cloudy conditions persisting. Rain showers will continue in the north and center, with a chance of brief showers in limited areas of the southwest. In the early morning, some high-altitude areas may experience freezing rain. Winds will be moderate westerlies, occasionally strengthening.
A slight rise in temperatures is forecast for Saturday, with partly cloudy and generally cold weather in most regions, while the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba will experience relatively warm conditions. There remains a slight chance of light morning showers in parts of the central and southwestern regions. Winds will be moderate northwesterlies.
On Sunday, temperatures will continue to rise, with relatively cold weather in most areas and warm conditions in the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Winds will remain moderate northwesterlies.
According to the report, today's high and low temperatures are expected to range between 12 C and 5 C in East Amman, 10 C and 3 C in West Amman, 9 C and 1 C in the northern highlands, and 8 C and 0 C in the Sharah Mountains.
In the Badia regions, temperatures will range between 16 C and 5 C, while the plains will see 12 C and 5 C. The northern Jordan Valley is expected to reach 20 C and 8 C, the southern Jordan Valley 24 C and 11 C, the Dead Sea 23 C and 10 C, and Aqaba 24 C and 12 C.
