Japan Imposes Entry Fee To Fight Overtourism At Mt. Fuji

Dhaka: Starting this year, an entry fee of JPY 4000 will be required at all four entrances to Mount Fuji. This regulation has been put in place to tackle overtourism at Japan's highest peak.

Last year, Yamanashi Prefecture had started charging an entry fee of JPY 2000 for the Yoshida Trail to Mount Fuji and doubled the fee to JPY 4000 recently.

After the recent changes from the neighboring region, the assembly of Shizuoka Prefecture has also approved a bill to impose an entry fee of JPY 4000 for the Fujinomiya, Gotenba, and Subashiri trails on March 17.

Both regions have standardized charges to ensure climbers pay the same amount of fee, regardless of which trail they ascend from.

These regulations have come as a measure to counter overtourism, as overtourism had been raising environmental concerns at Mount Fuji for the last couple of years. Japanese authorities have been planning other strategies as well.
