Hollywood Figures Demand Protection Against AI in Creative Fields
(MENAFN) Over 420 hollywood actors, directors, as well as other industry figures have inked an open letter asking the US government to uphold copyright protections in response to the use of artificial intelligence in creative industries, as reported by a news agency on Monday.
The letter, spearheaded by actress Natasha Lyonne and supported by notable figures like Bette Midler, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Ruffalo, and Cate Blanchett, warns that loosening copyright laws to allow AI training on creative content could weaken the economic foundation of the entertainment industry.
This plea follows recent suggestions from OpenAI and Google, which have advocated for relaxing copyright rules to enable AI developers to utilize existing content for training.
Google has argued that this usage would be considered fair use and would not have a substantial effect on original creators.
Despite this, Hollywood professionals are still seriously worried about the implications. The letter stresses that the entertainment industry supports over 2.3 million jobs in the US and contributes more than USD229 billion in wages every year.
It cautions that AI firms are seeking to “undermine this economic and cultural strength.” Actors, in particular, have been vocal in their opposition to AI’s increasing role in making movies.
