Iran’s ‘Chaharshanbe Suri’ celebration leads to fatalities, injuries

(MENAFN) Authorities reported on Wednesday that more than 21 individuals have been killed and 6,419 sustained injuries during Iran’s annual “Chaharshanbe Suri” fire carnival. The celebrations, marking the last Wednesday before Nowruz, the Persian New Year, took a dangerous turn as participants engaged in fire-related activities.

In Tehran, the capital, festivities kicked off after iftar, the meal that breaks the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan. People lit fires, jumped over them, and launched fireworks, sparklers, and even improvised explosives.

Even though the Tehran Police Department had issued warnings about using drones to closely track the use of explosives, several deaths resulted from the use of these materials.

Iran's Emergency Medical Services reported 21 deaths and 6,419 injuries countrywide, with 18 individuals in a life-or-death situation. The provinces of Tehran, East Azerbaijan, and West Azerbaijan recorded the highest number of casualties.

At an early point in the day, authorities announced 19 fatalities and 5,568 injuries.

Chaharshanbe Suri is celebrated on the last Wednesday night before Nowruz in Iran, which follows the Solar Hijri calendar—a system determined by the movement of the sun—and marks the start of spring.
