Al Jamali Stresses Importance Of Setting Up National Database For Persons With Disabilities
Doha, Qatar: Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) H E Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, emphasised that the rights of persons with disabilities are a priority issue in Qatar.
He noted the qualitative shift that occurred with the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar regarding attention to persons with disabilities, particularly the development of the right to accessibility in all means of transportation, hotels, all World Cup stadiums, and surrounding facilities.
Al Jamali considered this to be one of the best practices worldwide in implementing the rights of persons with disabilities. This came during the NHRC's participation in the annual discussion on the rights of persons with disabilities at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council.
Al Jamali said,“Our role at the NHRC is to monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and we have observed tangible developments in policies for inclusion in education and employment, and in providing health and rehabilitation services and infrastructure.”
He called for creating a comprehensive national database for persons with disabilities, noting the utmost importance of such a database nationally, regionally, and internationally.
He also emphasised the importance of setting up a database in accordance with the Washington Standards, an international reference framework developed by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Development Program in cooperation with ESCWA. Al Jamali stated that developing a database faces challenges in terms of full coverage, in addition to the inherent challenge of data privacy and protection.
He called on countries wishing to create a comprehensive national database for persons with disabilities to benefit from the experiences of countries that have made significant progress in this field.
Al Jamali noted that Qatar has announced that it is working to develop a comprehensive national database for persons with disabilities.
