Arab Countries Condemn Somali President’s Assassination Attempt
(MENAFN) Many Arab nations strongly denounced a failed assassination attempt on Somali Leader Hassan sheikh Mohamud that occurred on Wednesday, expressing their continued backing for Somalia’s security and stability.
The Somali government revealed that a bombing in Mogadishu on Tuesday was an assassination attempt targeting Leader Mohamud, allegedly carried out by al-Shabaab terrorists. According to the Information Ministry, Mohamud's convoy was attacked around 10:32 a.m. local time (0732 GMT) in the Xamar-Jajab district of Mogadishu.
At the time of the attack, the president was traveling to Mogadishu International Airport, intending to join troops stationed at the frontlines in Hirshabelle state.
The al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group, al-Shabaab, claimed responsibility for the attack, confirming that it had targeted the president’s convoy en route to the airport.
In response to the incident, United Arab Emirates Leader Mohamed bin Zayed spoke with Somali Leader Mohamud on Wednesday to check on his wellbeing following the attack.
The UAE president expressed his "heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the Somali people," while also wishing for the swift recovery of those injured.
