Arab League Council Condemns Israeli Occupation's Breaking Of Gaza Ceasefire

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, March 19 (KUNA) -- The Arab League Council has strongly condemned the Israeli Occupation for breaking the ceasefire agreement and resuming its brutal bombardment and horrific massacres against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
At the conclusion of its extraordinary meeting on the developments of in the Palestinian territories, the Council adopted a resolution condemning the occupation's continued crimes of aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.
The resolution called on the international community to implement all legal requirements related to the implementation of relevant resolutions to protect Palestinian civilians.
It urged countries and institutions of the international community to participate in protecting Palestinian civilians and to establish a practical and effective mechanism to implement the provisions of the UN General Assembly resolution and the report of the UN Secretary-General, which included viable options for the protection of Palestinian civilians.
It warned that the occupation's persistent violation of the ceasefire and its continued perpetration of crimes of aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people for 17 consecutive months, including during the holy month of Ramadan, constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights and divine laws.
The resolution condemned the Israeli response to the message of peace, security, and stability contained in the Arab Summit resolution of March 4, by committing further brutal and horrific massacres against Palestinian civilians.
It cautioned that Israel is undermining any opportunity or initiative for a comprehensive and just peace in the region based on international law, international legitimacy resolutions, the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, and an end to the illegal Israeli occupation.
It denounced the Israeli aggression and ethnic cleansing in the occupied West Bank, including the destruction of Palestinian refugee camps, the forced displacement of their residents from their homes, illegal colonial settlements, settler terrorism, and apartheid.
It reiterated its absolute rejection of all attempts to displace the Palestinian people internally or externally, as well as plans and policies to annex parts of the West Bank under any name or pretext, and to dismantle the geographical and demographic unity of the Palestinian territory.
It commended the international response rejecting any such endeavor, considering it an act of ethnic cleansing and a crime against humanity.
The resolution affirmed that the right of return of Palestinian refugees is an inalienable human and legal right, which no party may waive, whether by political decision or international agreement. This right is guaranteed under international law and United Nations resolutions.
It referred to Resolution 194 of 1948, which affirms the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes from which they were forcibly displaced and to be compensated for the losses they suffered. It also emphasized that any attempts to abolish or circumvent this right are contrary to international legitimacy and human justice.
It called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in ensuring the implementation of the right of return, as it is an inalienable right that does not expire with time.
The Council urged the United States, as one of the guarantor states of the ceasefire agreement, to pressure Israel to cease hostilities and implement all the agreement phases.
It also urged Israel to immediately resume implementation of the second and third phases of the agreement and withdraw from all areas of the Gaza Strip.
The resolution called on all countries to provide financial and political support for the Arab-Islamic plan adopted by the Arab Summit on March 4, 2025, and by the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on March 7, 2025, in Jeddah, regarding reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, confront attempts to displace Palestinians, and enable them to exercise all their legitimate rights.
It urged countries and international and regional financial institutions to quickly provide the necessary financial support to implement the plan.
It stressed the need to prosecute all Israeli officials responsible for the grave violations and crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people through international and national justice mechanisms, recalling that these crimes are not subject to a statute of limitations, and holding Israel legally, materially, and morally accountable for its crimes in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory.
It also underlined the need to implement the two advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice on the Palestinian question and the General Assembly's resolution on the Court's recent advisory opinion regarding the illegality of the Israeli occupation, the need to end it immediately, and respect the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
The resolution called on all states to comply with their obligations under international law, as set out in the advisory opinion and the relevant UN General Assembly resolution.
It called on all states to cooperate with the International Criminal Court in implementing the arrest warrants issued by the Court against Israeli war criminals, to refrain from politicizing the ICC's decisions, and to urgently support it in providing justice to victims and preventing impunity for criminals.
It urged human rights associations, lawyers' unions, civil society organizations, and Arab and Islamic communities in countries with universal jurisdiction to file a lawsuit against war criminals and members of the occupation army who participated in the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.
It called for the implementation of the Arab and Islamic Summit resolutions to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, impose the entry of Arab, Islamic, and international humanitarian relief aid convoys, allow international organizations to enter the Strip, protect their staff, enable them to fully perform their roles, and support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The Council called for the formation of an open-ended working group (Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, Qatar, and the Arab League) to discuss ways to address the situation.
The Council meeting was held in Cairo at the level of member states' permanent representatives and chaired by Yemen. Kuwait was represented in the meeting by its permanent representative to the Arab League Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi. (pick up previous)
