Irbid, March 19 (Petra) – Minister of health Firas Hawari inaugurated six drug warehouses and a vaccination center in Irbid Governorate on Wednesday. The project, implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Jordan with funding from the European Union (EU), aims to enhance medical supply chains and improve the distribution of medicines and vaccines across the Kingdom.
The inauguration was attended by EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Hanan Balkhy, WHO Representative in Jordan Jamela Raiby, Irbid Governor Radwan Atoum, and senior Ministry of Health officials.
Hawari underscored the project's role in modernizing Jordan's healthcare infrastructure, in line with the Economic Modernization Vision. He highlighted that it builds on the establishment of the Ministry of Health's strategic medical stockpile warehouse in Zarqa's Yajouz area, which was inaugurated by His Majesty King Abdullah II last year. This facility provides a four-month strategic pharmaceutical reserve, with additional warehouses being developed in southern Jordan and Amman.
The newly opened warehouses and vaccination center will work alongside the Yajouz facility to supply medicines and vaccines to hospitals, health directorates, and primary healthcare centers. Hawari lauded the EU's support and WHO's efforts in enhancing Jordan's medical supply chains.
The Northern Region's pharmaceutical warehouses now have a storage capacity of 2,650 cubic meters, expandable by 20 percent in emergencies. They feature advanced shelving systems, forklifts, a 75-cubic-meter cold room, centralized air conditioning, security monitoring, fire protection, renewable energy systems, and a refrigerated transport fleet. The project's total cost is approximately JD850,000.
The vaccination center, covering 480 square meters, includes two cold rooms with an 80-cubic-meter capacity, dry storage for medical supplies, and central vaccination clinics. Built to international standards, it enhances vaccine storage, reduces costs, and supports the national vaccination program in the northern governorates, with an investment of JD400,000.
EU Ambassador Chatzisavas emphasized that the new facilities mark a crucial step in advancing universal health coverage in Jordan. The EU has allocated €43 million to support Jordan's healthcare sector, including strengthening medical supply chains for both Jordanians and Syrian refugees.
WHO Regional Director Balkhy highlighted the importance of accessible, high-quality medicines and vaccines, noting that the new facilities align with WHO's regional initiative on equitable healthcare access.
WHO Representative Raiby stated that these developments are part of a broader initiative involving 14 newly constructed or rehabilitated warehouses, forming a nationwide supply chain network by the end of March.
She added that the initiative underscores the significance of sustainable public health investments, ensuring uninterrupted access to essential medicines and vaccines while reinforcing Jordan's healthcare resilience.
