South Korea set to deploy 14,000 police officers ahead of President Yoon's impeachment verdict

(MENAFN) South Korean Police announced on Wednesday that they would deploy 14,000 riot officers in Seoul to prepare for potential unrest on the day of the impeachment ruling against President Yoon Suk Yeol. This ruling concerns his brief offer to impose martial law in December.

The 14,000 officers represent about 60% of the nation's available riot police, who will be deployed under the highest-level security alert, as reported by Seoul-based news agency.

Initially, the police intended to assign 12,000 officers, but the number was raised to more effectively manage potential large-scale demonstrations and safeguard key facilities, such as the court and its judges.

The Constitutional Court, which concluded the impeachment trial over Yoon’s December 3 martial law declaration late last month, is expected to deliver its ruling during this week.

A minimum of six judges must consent to endorse the impeachment. If the impeachment is upheld, a new presidential election must take place within 60 days.
