Official says chances of finding more survivors of boat overturn in Cyprus "increasingly unlikely"
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Cyprus Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas expressed that the likelihood of finding more survivors from a refugee boat that turns over near the island’s southeastern coast is "increasingly unlikely."
The boat, transporting a count of roughly 20 to 25 individuals, sank in the Mediterranean Sea. Cypriot rescue teams were able to rescue two people and recover seven bodies on Monday.
Palmas noted: "According to experts, a person can survive for a maximum of 40 hours in water temperatures ranging from 16 to 17 degrees Celsius. As more time passes without locating additional survivors, it becomes increasingly probable that more bodies will be found instead."
Authorities are still hopeful of learning more about the boat's voyage from the two people who were rescued and are undergoing medical attention in the hospital. Palmas described them as being "in shock and deeply distressed," with symptoms of dehydration and hypothermia. Due to their physical and emotional states, their initial statements were unclear and difficult to comprehend.
