Western sanctions long-term strategy to exert pressure on Russia

(MENAFN) Western sanctions are not temporary measures but a long-term strategy to exert pressure on Russia, President Vladimir Putin stated during a meeting of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) in Moscow on Tuesday.

Putin highlighted that Russia has faced 28,595 sanctions in recent years—more than any other country combined. He accused Western nations of continuously introducing new restrictions and using them as a systemic tool to undermine Russia’s strength.

“Sanctions are not just targeted measures; they are a strategic mechanism of pressure against our country,” he said, adding that even if some restrictions are lifted, the West would find new ways to hinder Russia’s progress.

Sanctions against Russia began in 2014 following Crimea’s reunification with Moscow after the Western-backed coup in Kiev. The restrictions intensified in 2022 due to the Ukraine conflict, affecting Russia’s banking, energy, and defense sectors. The US and EU also froze hundreds of billions of dollars in Russian assets and cut major Russian banks from the SWIFT payment system.

US President Donald Trump has initiated peace negotiations between Moscow and Kiev, suggesting that easing sanctions could serve as an incentive for a settlement. Meanwhile, the Russian government argues that sanctions have inadvertently strengthened its economy by encouraging self-reliance and reducing dependence on Western technology.
