Thai Envoy Chairs 72Nd Meeting Of Asean Committee In Doha
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Thailand ambassador Sira Swangsilpa, in his capacity as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Committee in Doha (ACD) for 2025, presided over the 72nd ACD Meeting on Monday at the Thai embassy to advance the bloc's engagement in Qatar.
The meeting, which also aimed to strengthen further collaboration among Asean embassies in Qatar, outlined key activities for 2025 designed to advance Asean's engagement across various sectors. It also focused on bolstering co-operation economic and trade relations, defense and security, social development, human security initiatives, environmental awareness campaigns, and the promotion of Asean's diverse cultural heritage.
The ACD is comprised of ambassadors from the seven Asean member states with diplomatic representation in Doha: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand. It plays a crucial role in fostering regional unity and promoting Asea's interests in Qatar.
In the spirit of Ramadan, Swangsilpa hosted an Iftar dinner for ACD members, their spouses, and officials, fostering camaraderie and goodwill among Asean diplomats in Qatar.
Asean and Qatar enjoy a robust and multifaceted partnership. Qatar is a significant investor in Asean, with investments spanning energy, financial, real estate, telecommunications, agribusiness, hospitality, and medical sectors.
In 2022, Qatar further deepened its engagement with Asean by acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Co-operation in Southeast Asia. Looking ahead, the Asean – GCC Framework of Co-operation (2024–2028), adopted in 2024, will serve as a key mechanism for strengthening Qatar's regional engagement with Asean.
As the ACD Chair for 2025, the Thai embassy is committed to further enhancing Asean's visibility in Qatar, strengthening co-operation among Asean member states, and fostering close collaboration between Qatar and Asean countries through constructive initiatives.
