Study indicates people becoming increasingly stupid

(MENAFN) Human cognitive abilities, including reasoning and problem-solving, have been deteriorating in recent years, possibly due to increased exposure to visual media, the Financial Times (FT) has reported.

According to data from PISA, an international assessment of 15-year-olds in reading, math, and science, as well as adult cognitive tests, human intelligence appears to have peaked in the early 2010s and has been declining since.

The trend coincides with a shift in how people consume information, moving away from reading and toward visual content. While intentional use of digital technology can be beneficial, passive consumption of endless social media content and frequent context-switching have been linked to decreased attention spans, memory retention, and self-regulation, the FT explained.

Research by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University also suggests that reliance on AI for cognitive tasks may contribute to intellectual decline. As generative AI tools take over critical thinking and problem-solving, they could weaken the brain’s natural cognitive functions.

Meanwhile, governments and tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI development, with models like ChatGPT and Gemini advancing in complexity. Tech billionaire Elon Musk has even predicted that AI could surpass human intelligence within the next three years.
