Nightclub fire murders almost 60

(MENAFN) A devastating fire and subsequent stampede at the ‘Pulse’ nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, have left at least 59 people dead and 155 injured. Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski stated that the blaze was sparked by pyrotechnics used during a concert.

The fire broke out around 2:30 AM on Sunday when fireworks ignited Styrofoam on the ceiling, according to local media. Witnesses reported that the flames were followed by an explosion, causing part of the roof to collapse.

“As soon as the fire started, everyone rushed toward the only exit,” a survivor told the media. The panic led to a stampede, worsening the toll.

The nightclub, a converted former carpet warehouse, was reportedly packed with around 1,500 attendees at the time. Victims were primarily between the ages of 14 and 25, with many suffering from burns, crush injuries, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Health Minister Arben Taravari confirmed that 20 critically injured individuals would be transported to hospitals in Bulgaria, Türkiye, Greece, and Serbia for advanced treatment.

Authorities have issued arrest warrants for four individuals and are reviewing the venue’s safety regulations. In response to the tragedy, the North Macedonian government has declared a seven-day mourning period.
