Iran criticizes US attacks on Yemen
(MENAFN) Tehran has denounced the recent US airstrikes on Yemen, warning that they pose a significant threat to both regional and global stability.
The strikes were ordered by US President Donald trump on Saturday, targeting the Houthi-led Ansar Allah movement, which controls much of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa. Trump accused the Houthis of carrying out attacks on American and allied ships, aircraft, and drones, calling their actions “piracy, violence, and terrorism.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, condemned the attack as a violation of the UN Charter and urged the UN Security Council to intervene. In a statement on Sunday, he described the US strikes as a direct threat to international peace and security.
According to Yemen’s Houthi-run Health Ministry, the airstrikes killed at least 53 people and injured nearly 100. The full extent of the damage to Houthi leadership remains unclear, though US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz claimed that several key figures were eliminated. Waltz also suggested that future strikes could target Iranian ships, alleged Iranian military advisers, and other assets supporting the Houthis.
Despite these accusations, Iran has consistently denied any direct involvement in Houthi military operations. The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reiterated this position on Sunday, stating that Tehran does not dictate the group’s national or operational strategies.
The Houthis began attacking international shipping in late 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. They have also launched ballistic missiles and drones at Israel and Western military forces. While their campaign was briefly paused in January following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the Houthis recently resumed attacks on ships linked to Israel after accusing Tel Aviv of blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The latest US airstrikes come just days after the Houthis declared their renewed campaign, vowing to target Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.
