Houthis issue threat to assault US war-vessels

(MENAFN) The United States has reportedly launched additional airstrikes on Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah following a speech by Houthi leader Sayyed Abdul Malik al-Houthi, in which he condemned US attacks and warned of direct strikes on American naval forces.

On Saturday, US President Donald trump ordered a large-scale military operation targeting Houthi leadership and their capacity to disrupt key shipping routes. The initial wave of US airstrikes resulted in at least 53 deaths, including civilians, and nearly 100 injuries, according to Yemen’s Houthi-controlled Health Ministry.

In response, al-Houthi called on Yemenis to resist US military action, vowing that American warships and aircraft carriers would be targeted. He declared that Yemeni forces would block maritime navigation for the US as long as Washington continued its offensive.

On Sunday, the Houthis claimed they had fired 18 ballistic and cruise missiles, along with drones, at the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in the Red Sea. However, a senior US defense official told Fox News that American forces successfully intercepted around a dozen attack drones, preventing any damage to the carrier group.

The Houthi movement, officially known as Ansar Allah, has controlled large parts of Yemen since the mid-2010s. In late 2023, the group began targeting international shipping, initially focusing on Israeli-linked vessels in response to the Gaza conflict. Their attacks later expanded to include American and British ships following joint US-UK strikes on Yemen. Although the Houthis paused their campaign in January after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, they recently resumed operations, accusing Israel of violating the agreement.

The Trump administration has redesignated the Houthis as a terrorist organization, and Washington has pledged to continue its military campaign until the threat is neutralized. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized that the airstrikes would persist unless the Houthis ceased attacks on American ships and drones.
